Borat: Violence
I dont believe there were any graphic violence scenes, however there are a lot of hidden messages alluding to the idea of violence. Such as Mrs. Jew holding a large butcher knife and the kids kicking the jew egg that was hatched, the introduction of the town rapist, comments on killing terrorists and hanging gays at the rodeo. As well as Bush should drink the blood of Iraqi, and kill the country. Kids were also holding guns with a big smiles on their faces in the beginning of the movie. I would suggest taking out the scene with the kids holding the guns, remove a number of the occurring themes of violence that are alluded to via comments made on topics such as killing terrorists, hanging gays and even engaging in animal cruelty (at the end of the movie, there are men wiping horses while they are laying down on the ground).

I agree. I forgot about the issues with the terrorists and gays. I think that these scenes don't need to be removed per-say. But perhaps turning the dialogue into something that doesn't necessarily target one specific person (i.e. the jews).
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I agree with removing of the scene with kids and guns. I think that kids have access to violence via guns in their video games all the time. So I don't know if I think this should be taken out of a PG-13 movie. I definitely think that it shouldn't be in a PG movie but I think it seems alright if the movie were PG-13. It isn't like they were shooting it at anyone, which I think would be worse.
Borat is also very excited when he gets the news that his wife died.
ReplyDeletethere is a scene too where the bear's head is sitting in the fridge, its really subtle though
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is alot of violent references in this movie. I feel like some could stay and some neeed to go to get this movie to a PG-13 rating. I'm really not sure which are good enough to stay and whisch are really to bad to be in the kid friendly verison. I feel like this topic need to be disscused more in the group.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there not only is alot of violent references in the movie but there are also some clips, the running of the Jew's and kicking the Jew's egg I think should really be taken out.
ReplyDeleteThese are pretty much the ones that I found to be possibly offensive to people as well. The jew scene is extremely violent however, I think you would lose a sense of culture if you removed it. as we discussed in group I think renaming it might be a better action here. I think most of the comments at the rodeo we are talking about with violence should definitely be removed. As we had said, we can understand them as people that don't represent our cultural beliefs, which is why we can find humor in it, but obviously younger children may have a hard time realizing they are not valid arguments.
ReplyDeleteI think the kids with guns thing can stay, because i don't think it encourages violence, people see kids with guns all the time in countries in the news, it is used to show how behind and backward his culture is. I would say I would like to see a reference at the end of the movie that shows they are moving away from that. Also at the end, the crucifixion scene should be cut, while I am ok with poking fun at religions, I don't think that is the way to do it.
