Borat Thoughts

Overall, I thought Borat needed a lot of work. Broken down into categories:

Language
Just from initially watching it, I felt that the language was definitely R. There was a lot of use of the words "fuck" "shit" "ass" etc etc. Also, there was a lot of derogatory conversations regarding Jews. For example, is the entire scene about running with the Jews necessary to the plot line? I think that the language is easily fixed. A lot of language that was used, especially swear words, can be removed and still have the humor and still get the point across. Mainly, for a PG-13 movie I do not think any use of "pussy" "bitch" "ho" "nigger" "fuck" "shit" or "pussy" should be allowed (except for the single "fuck" that is allowed in PG-13 movies today.

Nudity
There was actually a lot of nudity involved directly and indirectly in the movie. I feel like a lot of it was more alluded to than being right in your face. There is a lot of male nudity. I agree with Nadia in that the entire scene of the naked wrestling is completely unnecessary and could be removed. Other scenes show Borat's partner near his nether regions but doesn't actually show anything. I do not see this as being bad necessarily for a PG-13 movie. I honestly think that just removing of the naked wrestling would almost be sufficient to put it in the PG-13 category.

Violence
There really wasn't direct violence in Borat however I do feel like there were violent themes, especially towards Jews. Overall I think it is a PG-13 rating the way it is, but perhaps they could try to not be so derogatory toward jews?

Overall Theme: Definitely an R rating but my thoughts on being lowered are touched on above.

  2. I agree language is the biggest issue in borat. I feel like this could be easily fixed by removing most of it, and changeing some of it to be more approprite for a younger audience. There was alot of crude humor in this movie that I don't think most parents of underage kids would like them to see. For example all the racist jokes that he likes to tell or all the rape references. I'm really not sure how to fix this proble except just to take them out completely, but that would make the movie thirty minuites long. So that would not be a good choice in editing this movie to be PG-13. I feel like this needs to be dissucussed more in the group. There is really not to much violents in this movie that I would worry about taking out in my opinion it all falls right in that PG-13 catgory. I feel like if it is not too bloody and they dont show sombody getting beat to death then it is all gravy to be in a PG-13 movie. The only scene that I can think of that would be a problem with nudity is the same scene everybody else thinks is a problem the nude wrestling scene towards the end of the movie. I dont think that we need to take this scene completely out of the movie. I feel like if they justreshoot the sceen with them wearing underwear then this would get the same point across and still have a little bit of a shosck factor.

  3. I agree with Clay, most of the language can easily be filtered out for the younger audience to make this a PG-13 rating.

  4. I also agree, replacing the language can still result int he movie being funny, but would make it a much more viable show for the audiences. I think the wrestling scene doesn't need to be taken out but edited to not show male nudity. There were also the pictures of his on that had nudity that needed to be taken out, we could show the first picture, where his son is clothed, but the rest are unnecessary. our group discussions covered these very well, and I was excited about that.
